Prime European Steamed Beech Sawn & Kiln Dried 26mm

Prime European Steamed Beech, sawn and kiln dried to 26mm, is a close-grained hardwood with a warm pink to light reddish-brown tone. Widely used for furniture making, internal joinery and turned work, it offers consistent moisture content and reliable dimensional stability straight from stock.

Specifications

Material European Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
Treatment Steamed, Kiln Dried
Grade Prime
Finish Sawn
Nominal Thickness 26mm
Available Widths 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 125mm
Length 2400mm
Use Class Internal use only (UC1/UC2)

What it's used for

  • Furniture frames, cabinet carcasses and chair components where a consistent, even grain is required
  • Internal joinery including staircases, handrails and newel posts
  • Turned items such as tool handles, wooden toys and decorative bowls
  • Hardwood flooring blanks and parquet strips in dry interior environments

Fitting and handling

Allow the timber to acclimatise in the room where it will be used for at least five to seven days before cutting or fixing, particularly in centrally heated properties where humidity fluctuates. Beech machines and planes cleanly with both hand and power tools, and it accepts stains, oils and lacquers well once sanded to a smooth finish. Because beech has low natural resistance to decay and moves noticeably with changes in moisture, keep boards stored flat, off the ground and away from exterior walls or damp conditions until they are ready to use.

FAQ

Can steamed beech be used outdoors?

No. Steaming improves colour consistency and internal stress relief, but it does not increase durability. Beech has low natural resistance to decay and is not suitable for exterior use, exposed conditions or anywhere subject to regular wetting.

What does steaming do to beech timber?

Steaming beech before kiln drying equalises the colour difference between heartwood and sapwood, producing the uniform pink to light reddish-brown tone the species is known for. It also relieves natural growth stresses, reducing the risk of distortion during drying and machining.

Is 26mm beech available in cut-to-size lengths?

The standard length stocked is 2400mm in widths from 50mm to 125mm. For cut-to-size requirements or larger trade quantities, contact Nottage Timber Merchants directly and we can advise on availability and pricing.

For other hardwood mouldings and joinery timber, browse our oak mouldings collection for complementary profiles. Nottage Timber Merchants offer next-day delivery across the Bridgend area and throughout South Wales on qualifying orders.
